Every year since 2009, the senior citizens at South San Francisco's Magnolia Center have made bags full of valentines for California servicemen and women with help from Jerry Hill. The project, which started when he was a member of the state Assembly, has grown each year. Now the Magnolia Center seniors -- joined by city councilmembers, other South San Francisco civic leaders and Senator Hill -- craft hundreds of valentines each year so that every deployed member of the California National Guard receives a handmade card and, often, local units in Mountain View and Sacramento receive the cards, too. in 2018, the seniors made 1,800 valentines.
