Governor Jerry Brown speaks with members of the Burke and Donohoe families before he signs Senate Bill 465 into law. The legislation by Senators Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, and Loni Hancock, D-Oakland, increases oversight of licensed building contractors in California. The bill was introduced in response to the collapse of a balcony at a Berkeley apartment building – a tragedy that killed students Ashley Donohue, 22, of Rohnert Park, her cousin, Olivia Burke, 21, of Ireland, and four of their friends, and severely injured seven others on June 16, 2015. All but Ashley Donohue were Irish exchange students.
