Senator Jerry Hill named Palo Alto Bicycles Scholars the 13th Senate District’s Small Business of the Year. He presented a certificate to the shop’s general manager Jeff Selzer and crew in May and welcomed Mr.Seltzer to the state capital in June for the California Small Business Association’s annual Small Business Day luncheon. Representatives of the small businesses selected by legislators in districts throughout the state are invited to attend the luncheon.
Established in 1930, Palo Alto Bicycles is one of the city’s oldest businesses.
In addition to its for-profit operation, the shop helps refurbish unclaimed lost and stolen bikes that the city police bring them. The retooled bicycles are given to youth who can’t afford to buy new ones. In addition to donating its services to the project, the store has contributed equipment to local nonprofits and schools over the past 17 years. The business also is proponent of community bike riding programs, like the Safe Routes to School for elementary and high school students.
