Virtual Town Hall: "The US Gun Violence Epidemic: What Can California Do?"

Dear Friends,

Gun violence is an epidemic in the United States. "Over 1 million Americans have been shot in the past decade," according to the Giffords Law Center, and it's getting worse. "In 2021, gun deaths reached their highest level in at least 40 years, with 48,830 deaths that year alone." This epidemic recently hit our districts when farmworkers in Half Moon Bay were shot in January, killing seven and injuring more. That's why we are hosting a joint virtual town hall on "The US Gun Violence Epidemic: What Can California Do?"

Virtual Town Hall: CalKIDS: California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program

Dear Friends,

Did you know research shows that children with small amounts of savings are more likely to attend college than children without savings whatsoever? That’s why over the past few years, the Governor and the Legislature have explored ways to promote household savings for families across the State of California. This led to the creation of an exciting new program called CalKIDS to help fund college savings accounts for millions of children.

These are very informal gatherings where I talk a little bit about what I'm working on, but they are really designed to give you a chance to share your thoughts with me.

Fires in California have compromised our community’s safety and well-being. San Mateo County’s risk for flooding due to sea level rise is one of the highest in the state. Please join me for a town hall with fire and flood insurance experts, as well as fire hardening authorities to help everyone prepare.

I invite you to join me for a virtual Town Hall focused on adolescent mental health. I have invited a panel of experts to share how to help adolescents struggling with emerging mental illness get the diagnoses and treatments they need. Additionally, we will discuss how to identify and address common stressors in a young person’s life so that they do not escalate into mental health crises.
