In a ceremony captured on Zoom, Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills as part of his worker protection package: SB 1159 by Senator Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, and AB 685 by Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes, D-San Bernardino.. Senator Hill's SB 1159 expands access to workers’ compensation and makes it easier for first responders, health care workers and people who test positive due to an outbreak at work to get the support they need, including necessary medical care and wage replacement benefits. SACRAMENTO -- After intension discussions in a more than three-hour hearing, the Assembly Health Committee passed Senate Bill 793 on August 4. The committee's 10-2-4 vote sent the bill to prohibit retail sales of flavored tobacco products -- including flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes, flavored non-premium cigars and cigarillos, and flavored smokeless tobacco products -- to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration.

On June 17, the Senate Committee on Labor, Public Employment and Retirement voted 4-1 to advance ACA 5, the Assembly Constitutional Amendment that enables California voters to decide whether to repeal controversial Proposition 209, which was passed in 1996.
