Legislation Restricting Sales of Flavored Tobacco Products Clears Key Assembly Committee

SACRAMENTO – The Assembly Appropriations Committee passed Senate Bill 793 today, sending the bill to restrict store sales of flavored tobacco products to the full Assembly for consideration.

Senator Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, issued the following statement.

“Thanks to Appropriations Chair Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and my colleagues on her committee, we are closer than ever before to saving lives and protecting our kids and our communities with Senate Bill 793,” said Senator Hill.

“It is outstanding that support for SB 793 continues to grow. More than 50 members of the Legislature are already, or intend to become, coauthors of this landmark bill. I’m deeply grateful for their efforts, those of the more than 140 organizations that support SB 793, and the bill cosponsors who include Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.

“We can see the finish line before us and we are working hard to ensure the public’s focus is not clouded by the smoke screens and the millions of dollars in misleading ads thrown up by Big Tobacco.

“SB 793 coauthors, cosponsors, African American thought leaders in government, health, the faith community, science, the arts and among our youth, as well as other supporters have provided strong counterpoints to the obfuscation. We are confident that together we can ensure the strongest tobacco control restrictions in the country become California law.”

If the Assembly passes SB 793, the bill must return to the Senate for concurrence.
