Wildfire Safety Virtual Town Hall
Dear Friends,
On Wednesday, March 18th, I am convening a virtual town hall focused on wildfire preparedness and mitigation. We will hear from local fire authorities and a CZU wildfire survivor, covering practical steps to protect your property, and state and local initiatives and resources.
Climate change has made wildfire risk a year-round reality, and communities in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are not immune – 51,733 dwellings across our two counties are deemed high or very high risk for wildfires. A 2025 study from UC Berkeley found that wildfire mitigation strategies can reduce wildfire destructiveness by up to 50 percent; preparation and prevention saves lives and homes.
This year I have introduced two bills that continue to prioritize strong, data-driven wildfire policy. SB 911 and SB 973 are two important measures aimed at strengthening wildfire resilience, improving mitigation coordination, and expanding tools to help communities better prepare for and respond to wildfire threats. This legislation builds on our ongoing efforts to ensure resources are directed where they are needed most and homeowners have clear, practical pathways to protect their homes.
