Virtual Town Hall: "The US Gun Violence Epidemic: What Can California Do?"

Dear Friends,

Gun violence is an epidemic in the United States. "Over 1 million Americans have been shot in the past decade," according to the Giffords Law Center, and it's getting worse. "In 2021, gun deaths reached their highest level in at least 40 years, with 48,830 deaths that year alone." This epidemic recently hit our districts when farmworkers in Half Moon Bay were shot in January, killing seven and injuring more. That's why we are hosting a joint virtual town hall on "The US Gun Violence Epidemic: What Can California Do?"

We invite you to our virtual town hall where you can learn more about what California has done to make our state safer, and what more we can do to combat gun violence throughout our state.

We are pleased to host these experts in the field of gun violence prevention policy and activists in the space: Dr. Garen Wintemute, Director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis; Shikha Hamilton, Vice President of Organizing at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence; Rudy Espinoza Murray, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America Spokesperson; and Dr. Jennifer DiBrienza, Board President of the Palo Alto Unified School District and long-time gun sense advocate. Our panel will speak on what we have learned over the years about what policies work to prevent gun violence, what the state of California has done, what local measures have been shown effective, and what conclusions we can draw from the data about gun violence.
