Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Privacy Protection Agency have announced a new privacy tool allowing Californians to easily opt out of the sale of their information by data brokers.
The Delete Request and Opt-out Platform — known as DROP — was made possible by SB 362 (Sen. Josh Becker), the Delete Act, which Newsom signed in 2023.
State Senator Josh Becker (D–Menlo Park) recently announced that California’s Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) — the strongest consumer privacy law in the nation —has far exceeded expectations. As of January 20, there had been 155,000 requests.
DROP, which launched earlier this month pursuant to the Delete Act authored by Becker, gives Californians a free, simple, one-stop tool to permanently delete their personal information from data brokers that buy and sell sensitive data without consent.
Community members came together to plant trees, recognize the civil rights leader Dr. Clarence B. Jones, and uphold the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Throughout the day, volunteers demonstrated a spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and joy as they planted 20 trees at Los Robles-Ronald McNair Academy in East Palo Alto and at other nearby preschools and elementary schools.
Tens of thousands of Californians have already signed up for the state's new tool to try and stop their data from being sold by brokers, officials say.
Gov. Gavin Newsom is touting the rollout of the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, DROP, which went live on Jan. 1.
"Your data should belong to you, and DROP will make that happen in one simple step," Newsom said in a statement.
