Senator Josh Becker Hails Governor Newsom’s Strong Move to Protect Teachers, Staff and Kids as California Goes Back to School

For Immediate Release

MENLO PARK – State Senator Josh Becker, D-Peninsula, cheered Governor Newsom’s first-in-nation requirement for teachers and school staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be tested regularly for the virus.

“Vaccinations are our best weapon to beat COVID-19. The Governor’s move today ensures that everyone -- our kids, teachers and all school staff – are better protected as California comes back to school with in-person learning,” said Senator Becker. “As a parent of two teens, I thank the Governor, teachers, school workers and our school districts for coming together on this issue. Together, we’re building a wall of safety around our kids.”

Last week, Senator Becker urged school districts to align their COVID-19 prevention practices with the policy the Governor set for state workers: Be vaccinated or undergo regular COVID-19 testing. Since the vaccine became available, the senator has advocated for prioritized access for teachers, school workers and early childhood care and education employees.
