Formula 1 is racing towards net zero emissions by 2030!

Formula 1 (F1) has always been at the cutting edge when it comes to fast cars. But that’s not the only field in which they’re leading the way. F1 is set to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030!
In 2019, F1 launched its commitment to reach net zero carbon by 2030. Since then, they’ve proven that they know how to move fast in more ways than one: by the end of 2024, they had already reduced emissions by 26% in comparison to 2018 baseline numbers!
In the cars themselves, hybrid engines are becoming more powerful, efficient, and cleaner at the same time, thanks to regenerative braking and greater battery capacity. Even though cars themselves don’t account for a large portion of F1’s emissions, they are looked to as global leaders and trendsetters. This means that F1’s innovation could inspire others globally in advancing the shift away from fossil fuels!
F1’s progress is happening on and off the track. The F1 offices have been using 100% renewable energy since 2022, racetracks have installed solar panels, single-use plastics have been heavily reduced across the circuit venues, and circuits are partnering with local food banks to make sure that surplus food benefits community members in need instead of going to waste.
In the world of motorsports, Formula E is also leading the way on sustainability. This year, the all-electric motorsport championship became the first sport in the world to achieve independent certification from BSI’s Net Zero Pathway. Formula E has had a net zero carbon footprint since its inception, and its plans don’t just rely on offsets. As a signatory of the UN Climate Neutral Now initiative and part of the UN Sports for Climate Action framework, Formula E maximizes its use of renewable electricity, minimizes waste at events, and streamlines freight logistics for efficiency.
Global leaders from every sector, from sport to government, are stepping up to prioritize sustainability. It’s exciting to see these organizations racing ahead towards a sustainable future!
