California data brokers must start deleting personal data requests Aug. 1

Starting tomorrow, data brokers in California will need to start processing requests from Californians to delete their personal data.

The Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) allows people to delete their information from hundreds of centers through a one-time opt-in.

The new system greatly speeds up the process of deleting personal data, says Vincent Joralemon, director of the Life Sciences Law and Policy Center at UC Berkeley. Before the DROP system, people would need to contact each data processor and request that their information be deleted.
