California, European Union Enact Laws Requiring Embedded Data on AI-Generated Images

State Senator Josh Becker of Menlo Park worked with EU lawmakers to develop legislation requiring embedded data on AI-generated images and audio that can be verified and tracked, and the first phase took effect in both places Saturday.

California's new AI transparency requirements officially took effect Saturday alongside the European Union's AI Act, marking the first phase of a coordinated effort to make AI-generated content easier to identify, as KQED reports.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - More than 500,000 Californians have signed up for the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) since it launched on January 1.

The platform allows residents to request deletion of their personal information from data brokers in a single submission.

According to the California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy), data brokers have already reported deletion of tens of millions of records. The platform requires data brokers to delete eligible personal information or face significant fines.
