Featured Josh Becker announces rollout of California AI transparency law
State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, announced the implementation of his landmark artificial intelligence transparency bill at a Sacramento press conference Monday.
Anyone who codes or produces AI systems — like apps that allow users to generate AI photos or audio — that are accessible to Californians are now required to include provenance data that identifies how and when the media was generated.
It’s the first phase of the California AI Transparency Act, Becker-authored legislation that went into effect in tandem with similar regulations in the European Union on Aug. 1. Major companies in the AI space, including OpenAI, Google and Adobe are now complying with the regulations, Becker said.
