(InMenlo) -- Yesterday (8/8/2024), State Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) joined Senators Catherine Blakespear and Anna Caballero, Assembly member Gregg Hart, other legislators, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and interim housing advocates to tour the latest in interim housing models. The tour was in support of passing the Interim Housing Bill, SB 1395 (Becker). This bill will make it easier for local governments to build dignified, safe interim housing for unhoused individuals and families and set them on a path towards permanent housing.
On display were interim housing units from BossCubez and Azure Printed Homes. Local governments can build and have built this type of modular housing in a cost-effective and quick manner, to meet the urgency and scale that the homelessness crisis requires.
They are relocatable, giving local governments flexibility to adjust supply as needed regionally over time. Interim Housing is different from traditional “shelter” in that everyone gets a private room, a game-changer in people’s willingness to come indoors, where they can receive the intensive supportive services they need to be on the path towards permanent housing.
