In Killing Crucial Decarbonization Bill, Assembly Committee Sets Back Progress in Climate Commitments

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park), author of the SB 308, issued the following statement regarding the Assembly Committee on Appropriations holding the bill:

“I am deeply disappointed that this pivotal legislation, which represents years of careful negotiation and historic coalition-building among stakeholders, failed in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. California has no strategy to develop the carbon removal we need to achieve net zero. And California can’t achieve its climate goals and get to net zero without carbon removal. SB 308 brought all stakeholders together on a comprehensive and impactful solution to this gaping hole and set the state on a realistic path towards achieving our climate goals. Today’s decision knocks us off that path and moves us further away from net zero. Despite this setback, I will continue working on this starting on day one of next year’s session.”
