California blocking new housing in this posh Silicon Valley town over wildflowers

(San Francisco Chronicle) - Three years ago the Silicon Valley town of Woodside drew the ire of state housing officials when it briefly declared itself a mountain lion sanctuary, a designation seen as a ploy to dodge a law requiring municipalities to allow duplexes and fourplexes. 

While the town quickly dropped the idea, Woodside now finds itself in conflict with a different state agency over housing. But this time it’s Woodside that is pushing for residential development and a state agency that is using endangered species, in this case wildflowers, not mountain lions, as a rationale for not allowing it.
