Senator Josh Becker, Assemblymember Marc Berman, and Supervisor Ray Mueller Call on Caltrans for Immediate Action on Dangerous Highway 92 Conditions

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Senator Josh Becker, Assemblymember Marc Berman, and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller today issued a joint call for immediate and long term action intervention by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to address hazardous road conditions on Highway 92, where a naturally occurring spring has caused persistent and dangerous wet pavement and multiple recent vehicle spinouts.

The section of roadway near the summit of Highway 92 has been the site of repeated accidents in recent weeks, particularly during high-traffic periods such as the recent Pacific Coast Dream Machines event in Half Moon Bay. According to local reports and community concerns, the roadway remains slick and dangerous, despite Caltrans stating that the spring has since dried.

“Public safety is not negotiable, and if Caltrans knows there’s a danger on one of our major coastal routes, we expect more than monitoring—we expect a solution,” said Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park)  Action must be taken now to protect drivers before another accident occurs.”

“Caltrans must treat this as a top priority,” said Assemblymember Marc Berman. “A recurring hazard on a critical highway like 92 can’t be dismissed or delayed. We need clear signage, improved drainage, or whatever is necessary to make this road safe—and we need it now.”

“The issue requires Caltrans immediate action, before someone is seriously injured,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller (District 1). “Delay in fixing an area where cars are slipping off the roadway at freeway speeds is unacceptable.”

On Friday, May 9, 2025, Caltrans reported it had diverted water and installed warning signs, but a long-term solution is still needed. The three elected officials are urging Caltrans to immediately assess and implement both interim and permanent fixes—such as improved signage, resurfacing, and drainage to ensure Highway 92 is safe for the thousands who rely on it daily.
