At COP26 I had the privilege of holding a press conference where I announced two new legislative proposals as part of my “California Zero” initiative. Together, these proposals will help California lead the way by achieving net zero GHG emissions from the state’s own operations by 2035 and to “Build Clean Faster.” You can learn more here.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
In honor of California’s first observance of “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day,” I joined students, teachers and staff from Martin Elementary School this morning for a walk to the South San Francisco school.

During Black History Month, teacher Deborah Carlino’s fifth-grade students learned about Ruby Bridges and her challenges of being the first and only Black student in what was previously a whites-only grammar school. The students made the special day of recognition possible when they asked how they could recognize Ruby, who, at just 6 years old, walked to school day after day amid angry mobs spewing racial epithets and other hate speech.
With the students’ backing, I was proud to introduce Senate Resolution 59 to proclaim November 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day in our state. The Senate passed the resolution with a unanimous, bipartisan vote. Because November 14 fell on a Sunday this year, the day is being celebrated today, Wednesday, November 17.

On Tuesday, Congresswoman Speier announced that she will be retiring from Congress. Join me in thanking her for her 40-year service to the Peninsula. The Congresswoman is a true superhero who has had an incredible career and done so much for California and our nation. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for her tremendous service.
Reproductive Freedom Champion
Last week NARAL Pro-Choice California released their 2021 Reproductive Freedom Legislative Scorecard—their first legislative scorecard in more than 20 years. Amid unprecedented national attacks on women’s right to choose, I was incredibly proud to be named a Reproductive Freedom Champion!

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently approved COVID-19 approved vaccinations for children ages 5-11. You can learn more about this decision from the CDC here.
The CDC is also encouraging those who are eligible to get a COVID-19 booster shot. Learn more here.
Additionally, it is officially the flu season! The CDC encourages everyone over the age of 6 months (with some exceptions) to consider getting a flu shot.

Enlisting the expertise of a State Certified Access Specialist or CASp is not only really important for our community members living with disabilities, but it also protects you from legal action for a time. This is a great way for young folks interested in learning more about public service, constituent services, and policy to get hands-on experience. We have a rolling application deadline. Staff Updates
I’m excited to welcome three new members to Team Becker in an effort to better serve our constituents: Nicole Restmeyer as legislative director and Cari Templeton and Saúl Miranda as district representatives. Nicole will lead my legislative team in the Capitol. Cari will cover the cities of Los Altos and Mountain View, along with coordinating my district events, while Saúl will cover South San Francisco, Brisbane, San Bruno and Millbrae, and coordinate my constituent correspondence program.
