Last week I returned from the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference where I had the honor of representing California along with a group of my legislative colleagues.

This past Sunday was the last day for the Governor to sign or veto bills. I’m proud to report the Governor signed all 7 of my bills!

Legislative Wrap-Up I learned so much during my first legislative session, which ended September 10th. In all, my team and I were able to send 7 bills to the Governor’s desk for signature (with one already signed!) and pass one Senate Resolution. Together, these bills advance our state’s efforts--and my priorities--to fight climate change, instill a more equal justice system, and increase opportunities for economic mobility.

Dear Friends,

Californians across the state have struggled financially during this COVID-19 pandemic due to lost or reduced incomes.

The State’s eviction moratorium has protected Californians from evictions due to lost income. This moratorium is scheduled to end on September 30th, but those who have applied for federal rental assistance cannot be evicted for six months.

Accelerating Toward the Finish The Legislature resumes August 16 and we’re gearing up for the final consideration of bills in each house. I have nine pending in the Assembly - including my climate change package, and I’m excited about the final stretch of my first Legislative year. Bills must be passed by the Legislature by September 10 in order to advance to Governor Newsom for his consideration. I am devastated by the horrific shooting at the VTA rail yard. We lift up the 9 victims who lost their lives and once again call for common sense gun reform. I will continue to fight with my colleagues to make sure California is a leader in the gun reform space. But we must pass national gun reform now.

Last Wednesday we all woke up again to an all-too familiar scene. Yet another mass shooting. This time right here in our own community. I am devastated by the horrific shooting at the VTA rail yard. We lift up the 9 victims who lost their lives and once again call for common sense gun reform. I will continue to fight with my colleagues to make sure California is a leader in the gun reform space. But we must pass national gun reform now.

The First 100 Days I can’t believe the first 100 days of my term have already passed. This past year has been a year like no other, with many of us facing challenges that were unthinkable just over a year ago. Nothing could have prepared me for the awesome responsibility of representing you in the State Senate, especially in the midst of a pandemic, but it’s been such an honor to advocate on your behalf on such important issues like climate change, economic mobility, and criminal justice reforms.

Dear Friends,

I hope you and your loved ones are well. Included in this newsletter are important updates on EDD, my growing District team, which is here to serve you, and our response to the pandemic. Concerned about the pace of the initial vaccine rollout, my team and I have been doing everything we can to improve the efficiency and speed of the state vaccine program and to support our counties, which have been leading the way on successful, high-volume vaccination clinics.

I’ve been focused on these five aspects:
